Since the Master System and the Game Gear were both based on a similar Z-80 architecture, a third party released a peripheral called the Gear Master Converter, which allowed the Game Gear to play Master System cartridges.

Essentially the Game Gear was a portable Master System, although the color palette was larger and thus allowed for better looking graphics. It also generated its own light without the need for attachments, which Nintendo did not do until the Game Boy Light came out.
